The Zooniverse is home to the internet's largest, most popular and most successful citizen science projects. Beginning with a single project, Galaxy Zoo, in 2007 the website now allows users to actively participate in a wide range of ongoing projects in the sciences and humanities including mapping moon craters, transcribing weather observations and catagorizing whale sounds. There has been an overwhelming response from the public, with over 780,000 volunteers now contributing.

Dr Chris Lintott, director of The Zooniverse project, researcher at the Department of Physics,University of Oxford, and co-presenter of The Sky at Night, will be presenting at Digital Past 2013 on the challenges of leading a crowd-sourcing project of such scale and the advantages that can be gained. These include:

The ability to cope with extremely large data set by providing many persons-years worth of classification

The ability to gather multiple independent interactions with the data, providing quantative estimates of error

large and powerful training sets for machine learning approaches to classification problems

By exposing data to large numbers of users there is a far higher chance of serendipitous discovery

Involving volunteers directly in the process of research provides an extremely powerful tool for both formal and informal education.

Chris will also be talking about Zoouniverse's latest project which is being carried out in partnership with the People's Collection Wales, the aim of which is to transcribe all place names from the 2nd edition Ordnance Survey mapping for Wales.

With the large scale digitisation projects that are taking place, a vast amount of historic newsprint has become available online in the past decade, both from the UK and abroad.

These newpapers, dating back as far as 1720, are proving to have great potential as a source of archaeological and architectural information. Indepedent researcher Dr Stephen Briggs will be at Digital Past 2013 discussing the projects he has been carrying out in data-mining these newly accessiable sources, including the transcription of over 450 Bronze Age burial in Scotland, the publication of c.1400 'new' medieval and later coin hoards and the reassessment of the number of human bodies found in Irish peat bogs.
The work of the Archive and Records Council Wales

Gary Tuson of the Gwent Archives will be explaining the work of the Archive and Records Council Wales at this years Digital Past conference.

Since 2010 ARCW has been working on selecting tools and developing skills for digital preservation. Central to the work is the Open Archive Information System (OAIS) model. Often difficult to understand by those with non-specialist knowledge, the work of the ARCW Digital Preservation Trust has been to simplify this knowledge, work which has led to the creation of a consortium in Wales aiming to share knowledge and experience.

ARCW has also been looking at the tools required to carry out Digital Preservation and providing the practical training and support in their use.

Marek Ososinski, a KESS student at the Computer Science Department, Aberystwyth University will be presenting on his current research into automation in laser scanning. He will discuss the visual technology that can aid surveyors by allowing them to observe crude 3D representations of the environment and enable them to maximise their positioning of data capture instruments such as laser scanners. Issues of data representation and management will be discussed alongside the requirements for real-time reasonaing and visualisation for providing instant feedback. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07060966265681043223noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8818610488597909953.post-36554769604498339962012-12-14T02:57:00.000-08:002012-12-14T03:05:12.614-08:00The digiDo Project
